Ten people have died and dozens injured after a rock formation tore away from a cliff and slammed onto boats packed with tourists in Brazil on Saturday, January 8.
Commander of the Minas Gerais State Fire Department, Edgard Estevo, said that the incident occurred on Saturday on Furnas lake between the towns of Sao Jose de Barra and Capitolio.
Governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, pointed out that heavy rains were what caused the rock to be loosened at Furnas Lake.
Chief of the Minas Gerais State Fire Department, Pedro Aihora also noted that at least 32 people were injured in the event. Of those 32 people, 23 people suffered minor injuries and were discharged on Saturday while two people were treated with exposed fractures.
Following the event, the local fire department deployed divers and helicopters in a frantic effort to rescue survivors.
Reports further stated that the authorities on Sunday have been working seriously to identify the dead, an effort that will continue for an undetermined amount of time.
“We’re not worried at all if it takes days and if necessary, we’ll keep working more,” Passas Police Chief Marcas Pimenta said at a news conference.
Meanwhile, the state of Minas Gerais, a landlocked area in Southeastern Brazil, has experienced recent heavy rainfall.
Additionally, State media Agencia on Friday noted that the Brazilian National Institute of meteorology issued red warnings for Minas Gerais projecting that more than 100 millimeters of rainfall daily for at least four days.
