Jamaica’s coastal areas and waterways are set to benefit from a major clean-up initiative by international nonprofit organisation Ocean Cleanup.
The group announced on social media that it will be based in coastal areas of Jamaica to carry out clean-up activities targeting major gullies for the next few months.
According to the organisation, the clean-up will include testing of a combination of interceptor barriers and an interceptor tender which are designed as catchments for debris such as plastics, rubber metals, and anything which could present hazards to marine life.
The targeted areas include Rae Town Gully, Kingston Pen Gully, and Barnes Gully.
The organisation, which has been in Jamacia since December 31, posted images of their results so far, and noted that they are pleased with how the system is functioning.
The Ocean Cleanup is an organisation dedicated to ridding the oceans of plastic and other pollutants through the use of technology and raising awareness of the impact pollutants have on marine life as well other ecosystems.
