The Jamaican bobsled team has won a medal at the North American Cup competition in Lake Placid, New York, on December 20, 2021, after they finished sixth with an overall time of 1:52.87.

The team comprised of Shanwayne Stephens, Ashley Watson, Rolando Reid, and Matthew Wilson.

Stevens and Watson teamed up to finish seventh in the Two-Man Bobsled race on December 15, 2021, with a time of 1:55.70.

In a social media post, Watson pointed out that earning his first Bobsleigh medal was a great way to complete the last races of the year.

“Great way to end our last races of the year with my MEDAL IN BOBSLEIGH!” he said.

Watson also pointed out that the first half of the 2021 season was rather and difficult, emotional but well worth it to have a stint in the Olympic Games.

“It’s been a long hard emotional first half of the season,” he continued.

He also expressed thanks to the individuals that have worked tirelessly in preparing the team for the world stage; these include coaches, physiotherapists, and sponsors.

“Proud of the #team and hugely #thankful of the sponsors, coaches, physio and people working behind the scenes as those of you that donated to the #jamaicanbobsledteam & federation,” he stated.

Jamaica first competed in the Men’s Olympic bobsled event in 1998 which was depicted in the 1993 feature film Cool Runnings.

Following that, the men’s team returned to compete in the Winter Olympics in 1992, 2002, and 2014.

Additionally, a Jamaican Two-Woman bobsled team made its appearance in the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang in 2018.

Jamaica also entered a Four-Man team at the Winter Olympics in Nagano in 1998.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Jamaica Bobsled Federation (JBSF) pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic will not be used as an obstacle but as a springboard to the success of the athletes.

The JBSF is also looking forward to the future along with the XXIV Winter Olympic Games slated to be held in February 2022.
