A 19-year-old teen will spend his summer behind bars after he was handed a six months prison sentence for his racial abuse of Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford.
The sentence comes after the teen identified as Justin Lee Price pleaded guilty to sending racist and offensive messages to the football star.
The verdict and subsequent sentence, stems from a series of offensive texts Rashford and other England players received following the team’s loss to Italy in the 2020 European Championship finals at Wembley.
Following the sentencing, Senior Crown Prosecutor Mark Johnson condemned the teen in a statement:
“I hope this case sends out the message that we will not tolerate racism and offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
Douglas McKay lead prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) added that they are working assiduously to crack down on hate crimes on sporting events.
“At the CPS, we play a crucial role in tackling these crimes and making our national sport inclusive and safe to watch,” McKay asserted.
Rashford and other black players reportedly received several racially abusive messages after they missed penalties in the deciding shoot out at the 2020 ‘Euros’ finals.
