Even in death, Argentina football great Diego Maradona can’t stop scoring as his 1986 World Cup jersey went for a reported record sale of £7.1m.

The Jersey which was worn by the midfield maestro during his controversial semi-final against England in which he scored the tournament’s greatest and most controversial goals was put up for auction by Former England midfielder Steve Hodge.

The auction is an about-turn by Hodge who said he would not sell the jersey following the death of Maradona in 2020, which comes 36-years after their jersey exchange during the tournament.

The price tag makes it the most expensive piece of memorabilia breaking the previous record held by the £4.4m sale of New York Yankees legend Babe Ruth’s baseball jersey in 2019.

The shirt dubbed the hand of God Jersey following Maradona’s deceptive handball against the three lions to draw the team level for which he denied illegally scoring labelling it the now famous ‘hand of God’ comment.

“This is arguably the most coveted football shirt to ever come to auction, and so it is fitting that it now holds the auction record for any object of its kind,” Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectibles Brahm Wachter expressed.

The Argentina captain punching the ball beyond goalkeeper Peter Shilton to score the controversial opening goal in the second half came minutes before he scored what would be years later voted the goal of the century by FIFA.

Maradona went on to lead the South American country to win the trophy, beating West Germany 3-2 in the finals.
