Dancehall’s protocol boss Skeng don, continues to receive major co-signs from the international music community as the up-next star following a massive break-out year. The clearest sign of this was made when the ‘Barbie’ herself ,Nicki Minaj specially recognised the artiste during her VMA acceptance speech Sunday night.
Skeng got a special big up at the end of Minaj’s speech for her video Vanguard award as she acknowledged the Spanish town-born artiste, among several iconic figures who were instrumental to her career.
The recognition comes just over 24 hours after the rapper revealed the addition of the remix to Skeng’s ‘likkle Miss’ to her recently released album Queen radio volume 1.
The link up comes almost two years after she remixed global dancehall sensation Skillibengs’s crocodile teeth. The single eventually broke into the Billboards chats in 2021. A feat which acted an impetuous to the Eastsyde top man’s introduction to the US mainstream masses.
The same energy seems to now be around the genre’s latest talent Skeng, who looks to be on the cusp of international breaks with the connection.
This also comes on the heels of the ‘Simple Dut’ artiste signing to Geejam records as proof of the rapidly expanding demand for his sound, image, and talent.
The partnership along with an ever-increasing fan base is expected to yield more international collaborations such as with the Minaj.
Since 2022, Skeng has maintained his status among the top tier most searched and streamed artists on the island and the Caribbean.
The ‘Gvnman shift’ hitmaker has churned out several top stream songs weeks apart: including Gang bang, London, Canada, Taliban-his featured track with Stalk Ashley and mega smash Protocol featuring Tommy lee Sparta. The latter is considered a Dancehall anthem among patrons and deejays alike
Such was the influence of the artiste’s music internationally this year, his hit single ‘London’ was also listed as one of England’s – ‘songs of the summer playlist’ by major British publication -The Guardian.
Skeng who has been among the playlists of several celebrities over the summer has been enjoying tour success with tour scheduling performing in sold-out venues in both Caribbean and Canada as well as commanding performances in the UK with mentor figure Govana.
With his new unique style of delivery as a trap hall fusion, he has been successful in tapping into the niche for his type of hardcore dancehall artistry. A style that has found favor with the masses and is gradually finding its way into the mainstream ear.
With the inclusion on Minaj’s project as well as her public co-sign it’s only a matter of time before he’s also a international Dancehall boss as well.
