The Ministry of Culture will on Easter Sunday provide the public with the opportunity to hear a scripture from the bible read in patois.

Scriptures from the Bible will be read by the Minister of Culture, the Honorable Olivia Babsy Grange and several other government ministers and officials via a podcast titled “Scriptures in Patois.” They will each read the patois version of Matthew 28, verses 1 to 10.

According to the Director of Public Relations and Corporate Communications at the Ministry, Oliver Watt, the aim of the initiative is to celebrate the Jamaican language and “to do something practical and meaningful.”

Mr Watt said; “We need to celebrate every aspect of our ‘Jamaicaness’, the things that make us unique. This is one thing that all of us use, but sometimes we don’t come out ourselves and look back at it or listen to it.”

In the meantime, the Mr Watt reports that there has been increased positive feedback on the podcast since it started in February of 2023. He also noted that more persons are recognizing the importance of the language.

The Director said; “This language is incredibly important. It is part of the essence of who we are as Jamaican people; whether we are uptown or downtown, this is the language that we use.”

The podcast will be posted on the Ministry’s social media platforms, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
