Ralph Yarl, the Missouri teenager who was shot in the head after going to the wrong address, has been released from the hospital.
According to reports, Yarl,16, was released into home care on Sunday, four days after being shot in the head and chest by the owner of the house he mistakenly went to pick up his younger siblings.
Speaking to local media, Ralph’s father, Paul Yarl, noted that he was responsive and “making good progress” at home.
It’s also understood that Ralph’s mother, who’s a nurse, has taken time off to care for him while he recovers.
It’s reported that on Thursday, Yarl, who went to a house on the same street where he was instructed to retrieve his brother, was shot through a screen door shortly after ringing the doorbell.
The homeowner, whose been identified as Mr. Andrew Lester, an 84-year-old white male, is said to have then stepped outside and shot Yarl a second time after he fell, hitting him in the chest with a 32 caliber revolver.
The family said Ralph was able to run away from the property to seek assistance.
He had gone to three different homes before someone helped him, the family added.
According to a probable cause statement, Mr. Lester told police that he was in bed when he heard the bell ring and then grabbed to investigate, as per the Independent.
He added he felt intimidated by Yarl’s size at the door and claimed fear that he would be unable to defend himself given his age.
According to the independent, Mr. Lester’s statement stated that Yarl was attempting to break in, which led to him open fire.
Yarl’s account to Police, however, contradicted Mr. Lester’s reported statement.
Speaking from his hospital bed at the Children’s Mercy Hospital, the teen said that he did not pull the door – but only pressed the doorbell, before being shot.
Authorities say there is no evidence that the two had spoken to each other before Thursday’s shooting.
The incident has since grabbed nationwide headlines and protests calling for justice with several celebrities also voicing their vexation on social media.
In a statement on Monday, Clay County’s Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson announced that Lester will be facing two felony charges- Assault in the first degree and armed criminal action.
Subsequently, the homeowner was slapped with the two felony counts and according to the New York Post, Prosecutors stated that Mr Lester could spend the rest of his life in jail.
