The chairwoman of Somalia’s national athletics federation has been suspended amid accusations of nepotism after an untrained female sprinter represented the country at the FISU World University Games in China.
Reportedly, the country’s Ministry of Youth and Sports released a statement directing the Somalia Olympic Committee to suspend the Athletics Federation chairwoman Khadija Aden Dahir amid the allegations.
It’s believed that 20-year-old Nasra Abukar Ali — who logged a pedestrian 20-second clocking in the women’s 100m Tuesday — is a relative of Miss Dahir and was given the chance to compete at the games because of her family ties.
The agonizingly slow run by Abukar has since gone viral and has sparked outrage among many online.
Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Barre Mohamud offered a public apology Wednesday and has also expressed shock at Abukar’s selection for competition at the student games in Chengdu, China.
He described the performance as an embarrassing moment for Somalia.
In a bizarre twist to the tale, the statement said an investigation revealed that there is no registered Somali University Sports Association.
The release also added the Ministry’s intention to “pursue legal action against both the Chairman of the Athletics Federation of Somalia and individuals responsible for [the] falsification of the Somali University Sports Association.”
