In light of a renewed surge in cross-over successes from Jamaica, Billboard has officially created a new column dedicated to genres Reggae and Dancehall titled “Reggae/Dancehall Fresh Picks of the Month.”

The column, which was officially launched on Thursday, will be a monthly release on the publication that highlights a curated list of “must-listen” releases from the Reggae and Dancehall arenas.

According to Billboard, “To help celebrate and honor the storied influence and and ever-increasing diversity of contemporary Caribbean music, Billboard is launching a new, monthly column to highlight 10 of the best new Reggae and Dancehall (and their cousin genres) songs each month.”

Billboard likened the renewed international interest to the burgeoning uptake of the 90s and 2000s. They also referenced tracks like Malie Donn‘s “V6,” Byron Messia‘s “Talibans,” and Teejay’s “Drift” as songs that have impacted international charts.

“In recent years, following a relatively quiet period bereft of proper crossover hits from the region, a number of hit records drawing on contemporary renderings of dancehall and reggae — Byron Messia’s “Talibans,” Ireland Boss & Malie Donn’s “V6” and Teejay’s “Drift,” among them — have made major waves around the globe. Just as the ’90s and ’00s were pivotal decades of record-breaking crossover success for Caribbean artists, the ’20s are starting to show signs of a mainstream resurgence in that direction” Billboard notes.

Songs such as Popcaan’s “Nyqui”, Skeng and Valiant‘s “Loyal Gyal,” along with “Slow Motion” by Cham, Dexta Dapps, and Bounty Killer were among the inaugural picks.

New sensation Najeeriii also found favour with Billboard’s curation, making this month’s list for his feature on Skippa’s “Like Bob” single. The track is currently the number one most trending release locally on YouTube.
