All schools and many organizations in association with the Peace and Love in Society (PALS) Jamaica celebrated Peace Day 2024 under the theme: “Let Peace Run Things!’ (Mek Peace Run Tings!) on Tuesday.
In pushing its theme, the General Manager of PALS Jamaica, Janilee Abrikian, in her message for Peace Day said that peace must extend beyond the home and schools and into communities and the country at large.
She noted that allowing peace to run things is “A world where there are no fights or quarrels, where everyone is treated with kindness and respect. It is a world where we celebrate our differences and learn from one another.”
The message also noted that peace is always possible as it starts with “Choosing to be kind, compassionate, and understanding.” Which means resolving conflicts through peaceful dialogue and finding solutions that benefit everyone.
Meanwhile, according to the Director of the Safety and Security Unit in the Ministry of Education and Youth, Richard Troupe, the Ministry has committed its support to this initiative, recognising the importance of inculcating a spirit of peace within children.
Peace Day was celebrated through several workshops and interventions by the Ministry of Education, UN groups, and other organizations.
All schools at the early childhood, primary, and secondary levels have been encouraged to mark Peace Day, as the MOE has called on deans of discipline, guidance counsellors, health and family life teachers, and school nurses to give targeted attention to peace-building activities.
