Conveying humour through storytelling is an art by itself and more so when delivered in song. It’s a skill that few have effectively mastered. With the intrigue around this style of deejaying, we spoke to one of the best to do it in dancehall, Professor Nuts for insights into the craft.

Inspiration for humour and storytelling dancehall

The Iconic Deejay shared that his sojourn into storytelling came after “picking” the humour aspects of Yellowman’s songs, which he then applied in his performances that turned out to be a hit among fans.

What makes a good story?

The process of crafting of a good storyline for songs is identifying interesting and relatable topics and composing the rhyme scheme to mirror as closely as possible the sequences of the various reactions in the situations.

The veteran Deejay shared that his concepts are guided by real experiences and his independent thoughts, adding that he writes all his lyrics because a co-writer may not share similar humour or ideas in its delivery.

Ricky Stereo, General Degree, Lieutenant Stitchie and Professor Nuts are among the deejays equally competent in crafting and delivering story-themed tracks.
