As the region continues to “rally round the West Indies” following their series sweep over South Africa ahead of the T20 Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean and the US, we look back at some historic firsts by the regional team
First-ever Cricket World Champions
The West Indies cricket team showed their calibre of being history makers of the sport from the get-go after lifting the inaugural Cricket World Cup hosted by England in 1975. Led by a brilliant century by then-Captain Sir Clive Lloyd, the Windies defeated Australia to deliver the region’s first major trophy.
First back-to-back Champions-1979
The Caribbean team repeated the same dominance in the following tournament in 1979, defeating hosts England to become the first double champions. A century from Sir Viv Richards ensured that the title remained within Caribbean shores for consecutive years.
Record-setting third consecutive finals appearance in 1983
Despite missing out on the Tournament’s first-ever three-peat winners, they, however, made history as the first three-time finalist in the 1983 Cup. Only Australia’s six-time appearances in finals better the record.
Historic hold on all major trophies across all levels-2016
History was again rewritten by the hands of the West Indies team after being the first they became the first international team to simultaneously win World Cup titles at the U-19, senior Men and Women’s levels during an imperious run in 2016.
(A feat yet to be matched by any other nation.)
Following a dominant series sweep over South Africa on the weekend, the “Windies,” the first of only two teams to win the T20 World Cup multiple times, will be looking to translate that form into more history as the first three-time holders when the tournament next month.
