European football giant England kicked off their Nations League quest on a winning note following a comfortable 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

First-half goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish were enough to seal the result for the “Three Lions” following a handful of key absences during Saturday’s fixtures.

Rice opened scoring as early as the 11th minute after being the quickest to react to a blocked Harry Kane shot to silence the jeering home crowds.

Rice was again involved in Egland’s second goal after providing a slick pass to Grealish, who doubled their lead in the 26th minute.

There were concerns over England’s balance up front heading into the fixture with in-form striker Cole Palmer and midfield maestro, Jude Bellingham out injured. However, that proved a non-issue as the visitors controlled the flow for the majority of the first opening minutes.

Despite chances to increase the lead, between turnovers and resolute defence from the Irish, the scoreline remained unchanged for the remainder of the 90th minute as the Brits bagged the points.

The result also marks a disappointing start for new Northern Ireland boss Hallgrimsson, who was appointed shortly after resigning as Reggae Boyz head coach following their Copa America first-round exit in July.
