An Italian man has been trying to readjust daily life after losing 39 years of memory, including that of his family, after recovering from a coma due to a hit-and-run.
According to reports, the man identified as Luciano d’Adamo, 63, who woke up from a coma following a 2019 hit and run, was convinced that he was a 24-year-old groom-to-be waiting to be wed to his 19-year-old fiancé.
It was a sense of confusion for d’Adamo’s family as he struggled to comprehend the reality of his eyes versus his memories, unable to recognise the older lady claiming to be his wife and man in his 30s calling his dad.
He was more dumbstruck by his reflection, which showed a senior citizen instead of an ambitious, youthful upstart.
“She called me ‘Luciano’, and I wondered how she knew my name,” the man recalled speaking to local media, adding, “Later, a 35-year-old man also showed up, but how could a man born long before me be my son? And then what wife?”.
He continued, “I wasn’t married, but engaged, and certainly not to that woman who must have been almost sixty, but to a 19-year-old girl. The wedding had already been arranged, and we were going to get married four months later.”
d’Adamo’ is reportedly still trying to come to terms with the idea that he may never recover the decades of memory from his life and significant events such as his wedding and his son’s life growing up.
It’s understood that he is working with psychologists to help him restore and rebuild relationships with family and friends.
