KINGSTON, Jamaica — Despite having to pull out of the Women’s All-Around event due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), Jamaica’s Artistic gymnast Danusia Francis is in good spirits, as she looks to make the most of her debut Olympic appearance at the Tokyo Games.
Francis, who posted a short video on her Instagram account with her left knee heavily strapped, pointed out that she does have a knee injury and was only able to do bars during the Podium training at the Ariake Arena.
“Only did bars today, but I am happy with my performance and enjoyed myself out there,” Francis posted.
Nicole Grant-Brown, president of Jamaica Gymnastic Association (JAGA) this morning revealed the unfortunate news that the MRI results confirmed that Francis tore her ACL.
As such, the British-born Francis, who is Jamaica’s second gymnast to qualify for the Olympics after Toni-Ann Williams’ appearance at the 2016 Games in Rio, pulled out of all the events but will brave the injury to attempt the bars to ensure Jamaicans have something to look forward to.
“Well, Danusia is a super positive young lady. Though she is disappointed, she still wants to do something out there and has decided to do bars with the help of her coach to land. Clearly, the injury is serious and she said she doesn’t want it to get damaged any further, as she looks forward to representing Jamaica at other future events.
“So she is just pushing to do something and hopefully will have her coach help her to land,” Grant-Brown shared.
The 27-year-old Francis was a reserve athlete for Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
