Jamaica’s super heavyweight boxer Ricardo Brown missed out on a spot in the quarterfinal after going down to India’s Kumar Satish in a Round of 16 fight at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, a short while ago.

With neither boxer able to land a knockout blow, the judges scored the fight 4:1 in favour of Satish in a split decision at the end of the three-round contest.

Brown, who punched his ticket to the Tokyo Games thanks to his ranking, started steadily using his jab well, as he tried to find his range against a brisk and more aggressive Satish.

The towering Jamaican threw a number of power punches but failed to connect and left himself open for Satish score. The judges unanimously awarded the first round to the Indian.

Knowing he had to win the second round in order to stand a chance, the 31-year-old Brown, also known as Big 12, engaged in a slugging contest with Satish as both fighters struggled to find rhythm in what was a sloppy three minutes of boxing.

Though Brown landed three telling body shots in the latter stage of the round, it was not enough to swing the judges’ cards in his favour, and as a result, required an elusive knockout in the final round.

The Spanish Town native, now based in Canada, will, however, go down in history as the first Jamaican boxer to parade his skills at the Olympic Games since the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

Then, Tyson Gray (featherweight), light-middleweight Sean Black and middleweight Rowan Donaldson sported the black, green and gold.

Brown, coached by fellow Jamaican Dewith Frazer, who competed at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, won a bronze medal at the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru.
