Adjani Salmon’s “Dreaming Whilst Black” wins Visionary Arts Award

Award-winning British-Jamaican filmmaker, Adjani Salmon, added another accolade to his resume after winning “Television show of the Year” category for his comedic drama “Dreaming Whilst Black”(DWB) at the 2024 Visionary Arts Award.

The Visionary Arts Award is UK-based and “is dedicated to celebrating social impact through popular culture and the arts, including celebrities, influencers and community workers who have inspired change.”

The awards which were announced on Tuesday saw Salmon emerge as the victor from the six nominees.

Salmon also shared his award-winning feat with fans via social media shortly after the announcement.

The show, a satirical dramatisation depicting racial and societal inequality through the relatable perspective of the main character Kwabena (played by Salmon), who aspires to be a filmmaker in the UK despite all the odds that come with being non-white.

The series has received critical acclaim since its original pilot in 2018 before being picked up by UK television network BBC 3.

The Popular series earned Salmon a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for Emerging Talent: Fiction in 2023, as well as nominations for Best New Scripted Series and Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series for the 2024 Spirit Awards.

The BAFTA winner was also among the nominees for “Outstanding Breakthrough Creative (Television)” at the recently concluded Image Awards.
