Jamaica’s swim darling Alia Atkinson was confirmed on Wednesday as a chairperson of the FINA Athletes’ Committee, following recent elections.
FINA is the international federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee for administering international competitions in water sports.
The Jamaican will now have responsibility for athletes’ affairs in various aquatics disciplines, including diving, synchronized swimming, freestyle, and other water sports.
As Chairperson, Atkinson represents the collective voice of aquatic sports athletes in regards to any decision to be made or adjusted within the sport.
Atkinson, who was appointed unopposed as the representative for Americas, shared with the media her joy in the appointment as well her mandate as the conduit for athletes’ affairs to the federation.
This appointment in the first instance is effective for four years.
“Today marks another significant step forward for both FINA and all aquatics athletes,” said the five-time Olympian.
“The Athletes’ Committee will act as a critical link between athletes and FINA. Having the athlete community choose those who represent them in important decisions is critical for the future development of our beloved sport,” she added.
Atkinson who holds short course world records in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke represented Jamaica in the 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2018 Olympics games before announcing her retirement last year [2021].
