Belgian goalkeeper dies after saving penalty

A Belgian goalkeeper died suddenly after saving a penalty for his team during their league game recently.

According to reports, 25-year-old Arne Espeel collapsed shortly after making a sublime save for his team Winkel Sport B during their division 2 fixture against Westrozebek on Saturday.

It’s understood that Espeel, who was very active during the game, collapsed after getting up from the ground following his save, sending shock and bewilderment around the grounds.

Local reports further shared that medical personnel who were on location were unsuccessful in resuscitating the keeper even with the use of a defibrillator. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, reports say.

The club confirmed the player’s passing via statement shortly after.

“Winkel Sport is in very deep mourning by the sudden death of Arne Espeel,” the statement read. “We wish family and friends of Arne our heartfelt condolences in this heavy loss. Football is an afterthought.”

Team manager Patrick Rotsaert also added his grief, The Independent reports.

“This is a disaster and a shock to everyone,” said Rotsaert said “Arne had been with the club all his life and was very loved.”

 “He was a wonderfully sympathetic boy, always in a good mood and willing to help. This is really a heavy blow. First of all, for his family and also our entire club,” he continued.

Fox News reports that Espeel’s family and teammates were among 1,000 mourners who participated in a walk of silence in Sint-Eloois-Winkel in his honor on Monday.

the exact cause of his death has yet to be disclosed.
