Jamaica’s Benjamin Alexander, officially made history this morning after completing in Alpine Ski event at the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.
Alexander, who became the first ever Jamaican to qualify for the event posted 1:37.94 in his first run, with an improved time of 1:40.58 in his second run, for a cumulative time of 3:18.52 to place 46th.
The Jamaican who took up the sport just six years prior, expressed excitement and gratitude being able to compete and finish the race for the country: “If you finish you beat everyone who doesn’t,” the former DJ turned athlete shared.
In fact, that’s exactly what he did, finishing ahead of over 40 other more experienced athletes who were unable to complete the event.
Finishing 46th out of over 80 competitors in his first Winter Olympics is by any standard a massive feat, especially by a new comer.
Monobob sleder, Jazmine Fenlator-Vicotrian, also performed credibly in her first Monobob sled Olympics. She finished the evening 19th out of 20 athletes with times of 1:06.73 and 1:06.49 after two runs. She is the first ever Jamaican to qualify for the Olympics in the event.
Heat three is set for later tonight, with day three of the competition on Monday.
