France and Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema has called time on his international playing career just a day after the conclusion of a gripping final in Qatar.

Benzema, made the deceleration on his birthday via a tweet on Monday morning to announce his journey with France is “ending”

“I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I’m proud of it!

I have written my story and ours is ending. #Nueve,” the reigning Ballon d’Or winner tweeted.

The Real Madrid Talisman who turned 35 on Monday missed France’s entire World Cup Campaign after picking up an injury during training in Qatar, days before their first world cup group game kicked off.

Benzema’s retirement comes days after he quelled speculations of a would-be dramatic return to France’s squad for finals against Argentina due to a loophole in the rules which kept him eligible as he was not officially replaced in the squad.

Benzema had reportedly turned down the rumored invitation to advert any potential disruption in the squad among players who battled throughout the tournament.

The striker posted a cryptic message on his social media saying: “I Don’t care” which is heavily speculated to be a response to calls for his inclusion into Sunday’s lineup, especially with several players falling ill-to sudden virus during the week.

His departure brings an end to a checkered history between the player and the French national team,

Which has seen him left out for five years after being implicated in a blackmailing incident with then-team-mate Mathieu Valbuena in 2015.

Benzema received his first call-up in 2006 and was part of the Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup squads that were eliminated in the group stage.

Quarter-final exits in Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup were as good as they got for Benzema at major international competitions.

He hit out at the French Football Federation and manager Didier Deschamps after not being picked for Euro 2016, where France lost in the final to Portugal in extra time.

He and Manager Deschamps had seemingly patched things up which saw his Benzema returned over five years later at last year’s Euro 2020.

He scored four goals in four games before France was eliminated on penalties by Switzerland.

later that year, however, Benzema won the Nations League tournament with France and helped them qualify with ease for the 2022 World Cup.
