The second coming of Frank Lampard as manager of Chelsea came sooner than many expected after he was temporarily re-appointed as interim manager of the club for the remainder of the season.
Lampard’s surprise selection as club caretaker was officially confirmed by Chelsea via their social media on Thursday morning.
His re-appointment comes amid discussions among potential suitors for the permanent managerial role at the London club.
Former Spain and Barcelona manager Luiz Enriquez , former Bayern Munich Boss, Julian Nagelsmann, as well as Zinedine Zidane, have been heavily considered as front-runners for the post.
Lampard’s return comes two years after his first stint at his former club where he lasted 1 and a half seasons between the 2021 and 2022 campaigns before being sacked after sub-par performances.
The club legend, who had a turbulent time steering the Chelsea ship in his original tenure, would view this as an opportunity for redemption in this short-term agreement.
Lampard, who’s again tasked with guiding his charges toward steady waters to close the season, will begin with a ‘warmup’ game against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the premiership on Saturday, before his major assignment against Real Madrid in the Champions League on April 12.
The first leg of their quarter-final game will be in Madrid.
Chelsea, who is 21 points adrift from a top-five European spot at 11th in the standings with 39 points, will be seeking a top-half finish in their remaining nine games in the league.
