Distinguished track coach Glen Mills was recently honoured with the key to Broward County and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the People Profile Awards ceremony, in Florida.
Coach Mills was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award by Commissioner Hazelle Rodgers, who was described as “a true legend in the world of athletics,” noting his achievements in coaching Olympic and World Championship medalists, setting records, and earning prestigious honors.
He was also given a Proclamation from the City of Miramar declaring September 24th Glen Mills Day which was presented by Miramar Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis.
Mills guided the iconic Usain Bolt to eight Olympic gold medals including two individual world records over the 100 and the 200 meters.
He also shaped the careers of 2011 world 100 metre champion Yohan Blake, 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Warren Weir former World Champion Kim Collins, Daniel Bailey and Aileen Bailey among others.
However, Glen Mills’ journey commenced at Camperdown High School, where he initially aspired to be a sprinter. Despite facing challenges, he immersed himself in athletics and was later assigned coaching responsibilities by Head Coach Henry McDonald Messam who noticed Mills’ potential. Mills eventually became an integral part of the Camperdown High School coaching staff. A change in leadership initially displaced him, but the support of his athletes led to his successful reinstatement.
Since then, Coach Mills now boasts an impressive coaching tenure spanning five decades.
The awards took place on Sunday, September 24, 2023, at the Faith Center in Sunrise, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
