Major US record label Def Jam Recordings officially confirmed the signing of Dancehall star Masicka to its label following a public welcome to the company on Tuesday.
Following days of speculation, the iconic label shared the official confirmation via its social media on Tuesday night.
As previously reported by SLEEK Jamaica Media last week, Masicka’s agreement with Def Jam was hinted at after the release of his latest single ‘Pieces’ featuring Jahshii, which had begun receiving promotion by the label on its site.
In an interview with noted publication Variety Magazine, Tunji Balogun, chairman and CEO of Def Jam Recordings shared their excitement about the recruitment of Gennasyde boss to their team.
“Def Jam has always been the home for great artists across the wide spectrum of Black music, and Masicka is very much emblematic of that vision,” said Balogun.
“Representing the new wave of Jamaican dancehall and reggae, Masicka’s versatility and unique sonic perspective has the potential to impact markets all over the world. It feels like the beginning of something very special. We’re excited to welcome him to our Def Jam family.”
Masicka, now joins iconic Reggae Dancehall star Buju Banton as the other current act from the island signed to the label.
The official confirmation coincides with the “Tom Brady’s” hitmaker’s receiving YouTube plaque for passing 1 million subscribers, along with the release of the video for Pieces which has since jumped to the number 1 trending song on the platform.
