District 5, a true trendsetting restaurant located at the R Hotel in New Kingston, has been selected as the Best Sunday Spot during this year’s Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards, which took place on Friday, July 16, 2021.
The restaurant, which opened last December, was also nominated for three other accolades that evening, including Restaurant of the Year, Best COVID-19 Family Dining Experience, and Best Wine/Cocktail Experience.
A Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Award is one of the highest honours given to restaurants in the region. In fact, the awards ceremony has been dubbed by many as the Caribbean’s Premier Culinary Experience, honouring hundreds of thousands of people who work in the food industry, since its inception 22 years ago.
“We are very honoured and appreciative of this Award as we recognise how prestigious the Observer Food Awards is in the industry,” said major stakeholder Joseph Bogdanovich.
He noted that the award would not be possible without the input of his competent and hardworking team, which has led to the restaurant’s tremendous success since opening seven months ago, during the pandemic.
“I am very grateful to an excellent team. I want to thank Dian Kelly, Lemeisha Morgan, Claudius Squire, Glenville Brown, Asontee Dally, Robert Henry, Kedeisha Dixon, Shane Young, Abe Coleman and the entire D5 team that goes above and beyond,” said Bogdanovich.
“I also could not have done DISTRICT 5 without Karla Jankee, Leeann Dunkley and Dealo Gordon who keep the operations on their toes while managing the marketing. Last but certainly not least, I express my gratitude to Rory Baugh our Restaurant Manager and Tashanie Rose our supervisor,” he added.
District 5 is a restaurant that offers a fresh approach to the energy of both fine dining and a casual sky terrace. The restaurant experience includes interactive themed nights, live acoustic performances and an eclectic mix of Caribbean and global cuisines.
The award-winning chef, Brian Lumley who has brought an international flair to the restaurant, was hired as the restaurant’s Executive Chef, to create an exciting menu that takes a modern approach to Jamaican and Caribbean food “in a way that creates a cosmopolitan experience that still retains the spirit of the islands at its very core”.
Also included in the restaurant’s award-winning team is the manager Rory Baugh and Tashanie Rose the restaurant supervisor.
The space opened on December 15, 2020, seamlessly blending elements of Jamaica’s vibrant culture highlighting food, music and entertainment in the capital city.
