Following the explosion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, there have been equally shared concerns over their use to mimic original content, especially in the music industry. Given its rising concern, music insiders DJ Nasaal and KaleX share insights on the potential impact on culture-sensitive assets like dubplates.

What is a dubplate?

Dubplates are “recordings by an artiste of a specific song in a version that represents a big-up of a specific sound or DJ” KaleX explained.

From a sound system perspective, it reflects a degree of elevated respect while from an artiste, it’s a means of income he added.

Dangers of AI misuse in local music

Given the economic implications of the dubs, AI misuse could create a situation where industry players get fleeced.

Suggested solutions

Having trustworthy contacts is among the solutions proposed to counter the probable risks he put forward.

DJ Nasaal also shared similar views on how the unchecked application of the software in the hands of unscrupulous individuals could create confusion within the space. He, however, advanced the consideration of legislation as a preemptive measure.

While nothing is 100% foolproof, a collective channel of “authorisation” is proposed to safeguard, to certify the authenticity of the original version of a track or its “special,” he expressed.
