Since its inception 30 years ago, the Billboard Music Awards has enjoyed a comfortable status as one of the most anticipated music award shows of the season.
Artistes such as Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Adele have swept up awards in staggering amounts and have been launched further into stardom. Though the Awards Show distributes shiny golden microphones in a comprehensive array of categories, the Artiste of the Decade award stands at its most coveted.
The exclusive list of recipients, Mariah Carey who held the 90’s in a chokehold with her angelic whistle tones and Eminem who had jaws dropping at his rapping prowess in the 2000s gains one more with genre-bending Canadian rapper and singer Drake for the 2010s.
The decision to appoint Drake with this honour was easy to make. It comes after Billboard released its top artistes of the 2010’s list which he headed followed by artists such as Rihanna and Bruno Mars to name a few. Also taken into consideration was the performance on the music publication’s Top 100 and 200 lists, touring revenue and social media data.
The news of this accolade comes as no surprise to fans of the gifted musician who since his 2010 debut has achieved 45 top ten placements on the Top 100 charts and the most entries overall at 232.
This year’s BBMA’s could see him not only receiving Artist of The Decade but possibly a win (or several!) from the seven (7) other categories he has been nominated for. Catch the Billboard Music Awards and find out for yourself on Sunday, May 23rd at 8 pm on NBC.
