Serbian Authorities have outlined that a Ukrainian cargo plane carrying munitions from Serbia to Bangladesh crashed in northern Greece late on Saturday, killing all eight crew members on board.

Reports indicate that all eight crew members were Ukrainian citizens. It is also understood that the cause of the crash could be linked to engine failure.

Reports state that around 11 p.m., the Antonov 12, which was operated by Ukrainian cargo airline Meridian, crashed shortly after approaching it’s landing site.

Following the crash, 15 firefighters with seven vehicles immediately went to the scene while additional firefighting forces followed including special units with two special vehicles for the collection of hazardous material.

Meanwhile, the Greek Foreign Ministry has expressed condolences towards the families of the slain victims noting that the event was unfortunate.

“Profoundly saddened by the news of the cargo plane crash in northern Greece, near Kavala. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the 8 Ukrainian crew members who tragically lost their lives in the plane crash ” the foreign ministry tweeted.

In the interim, Greek authorities said the special disaster response unit and military staff, including mine clearance units, had been dispatched to the scene.
