Newly crowned Commonwealth Games women’s 100m Champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, is one step closer to doubling up her crown in Birmingham after advancing to the finals of the 200m on Friday.
Thompson-Herah, running from lane 5 in semi-final three, cantered to routine 22.63 seconds for a virtually unchallenged win as she comfortably secured a spot in the final of the half lap event. She finished well ahead of Canada’s Natassha McDonald who posted a season’s best of 23.21s for second.
Being the only person to break 22-seconds this season coming into the race, Elaine’s win was essentially a formality for records keeping.
The Jamaican who is the favorite for the event has been conservative through the rounds, as she continues to manage her energy levels well ahead of the finale.
She will be joined in the final showdown by team mate Natalliah Whyte, who also secured a spot from semi-final two after posting 22.09 seconds to qualify second behind Nigeria’s Favour Ofili, who took the opening semi-final in 22.68 seconds.
The finals will run on Saturday and the Jamaicans aim for another sweeping performance having already bagged all sprint titles at the Olympics and World Championships.
This in addition to the 100m crown at the U-20 Championships in Cali, Colombia along with being favorite to take the pending 200m finals later today.
