It’s set to be an England vs Spain final at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup following England’s thrilling 3-1 victory over Australia on Wednesday.
In a game with several storylines around its buildup, England’s narrative prevailed in an entertaining fixture in front of a capacity crowd in Sydney.
Following a nervy opening 20 minutes, the English team began to find gaps in the Australian defense and was rewarded in the 36th minute after Ella Toone’s volley landed in the top corner of the Aussie goal to break the deadlock.
Australia, however, began to rally and create several chances that threatened England’s goal but were thwarted by equally alert defending as the half ended 1-0.
The second half continued in the same vein. Willed on by a vociferous home crowd, the “Matildas” responded in kind, as star striker Sam Kerr pulled the co-host level with an absolute stunner from 25 yards.
Her shot whizzed over goalkeeper Mary Earps’ head to make it 1-1 just after the hour mark.
Despite the momentum shift, England strategically absorbed the pressure before launching a counter in the 71st minute as Lauren Hemp pounced on a defensive error to restore their lead before Alessia Russo sealed the deal with an 86th-minute strike.
The win sees England qualify for their second consecutive major final after lifting the European crown last year as they attempt to complete the international double.
They will now tackle their European rivals, Spain, in Sunday’s final.
The “Lionesses” will be seeking to become the first England football team to lift the World Cup since the success of their male counterparts in 1966.
