Girl power: Sacaj wins 2022 Jamaica festival song competition

It was the ‘rose amongst the thorns’ that was in full bloom in Thursday night’s final of the 2022 Jamaica Festival Song Competition as Sacaj, the lone female competitor triumphed in the grand finale at the National Indoor Sports Center.

The St Mary native’s song entry; ‘Nuh weh Nuh nice like Yard’, was voted the best effort among nine other compelling entries in the finals, to be adjudged the 2022 champion as she walked away with not only the title as festival song champ but a cool $ 3million.

The cash prize is set to be shared amongst the performer, writer and, producer of the track.

Sacaj’s victory makes it back-to-back wins for women in the competition, as she takes over the reign from last year’s champion Dancehall artiste Stacious.

The 29-year-old, is now the fifth woman to walk away with top honors in the competition’s 56-year history.

 The other previous female winners include: Heather Grant in 1992, Cheryl Clarke in 1999 and 2012 winner Abby Dallas.

‘I am a Proud Jamaican’ by Magic Flute grabbed the runner’s spot while, dancehall act Nitty Kutchie was third with ‘Defend Jamaica’ who also walked away with the best performer prize.

The other finalists were: Dez I Boyd with-Jamaica Sweet Again, ‘Sixty’ by One1; Orkid’s –‘Diamond Jubilee’, ‘Jamaica Nice Again’ Inspiyah, ‘Rock to da Beat’ by Intrestt Rory Stamp’s- ‘Bring Back The Love’ and Nazzle Man’s- ‘Out Of Many’ .
