CONCACAF is set to have four representatives in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after Caribbean team Haiti secured qualification for their first tournament following their 2-1 win over Chile on Tuesday.
The Haitians, who finished outside of the top three automatic qualifiers following their fourth place in the CONCACAF women’s championship last year, grabbed the final wild card spot after a dramatic win over their South American rival.
19-year-old midfielder Melchie Daëlle Dumornay was the hero for Haiti after bagging a brace for the Caribbean team.
Dumornay scored in extra time of both halves- 45+1 and 90+8 as they held on following 90+11 minute consultation by Chile.
The final whistle however an additional significance to those goals as it marked a historic qualification for the women’s program of Haiti.
They now join the likes of back-to-back qualifiers Jamaica, World champions; the USA, and Olympic champion- Canada in the World Tournament slated for Australia and New Zealand which will run from July 20- August 20.
