Actor Sir Michael Gambon, best known for playing Albus Dumbledore in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, has died at 82, “following a bout of pneumonia,” according to a family statement on Thursday.

The statement said:

“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”

Sir Michael, whose career in film and theatre spans more than 60 years, studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, making his professional stage debut in 1962.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that Gambon became a household name, following his role as the lead character Philip Marlow in the hit 1986 ‘Anglo-American’ television mini-series “The Singing Detective.”

It was, however, at Hogwarts where he became a global figure for his role as the iconic headmaster in the Harry Potter movies.

He assumed the role of the wise head of the fabled “school of wizardry” in 2002 following the passing of Richard Harris, who originally played the character.

He achieved several recognitions throughout his career, most notable being his appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1990, followed by his knighthood for his services to drama eight years later.
