Dancehall star Jada Kingdom is now an independent artiste after revealing her split from Republic Record.

In an interview with US publication Teen Vogue, Jada shared that she is no longer under the Republic banner and has opted to continue her musical as an independent act.

“Now I’m a fully independent artist, no longer with a label,” “Banana” singer shared with Teen Vogue

The revelation comes just two years after inking a deal with the Universal Music subsidiary in 2021.

The deal was described at the time as “the biggest deal for a Caribbean female artist ever.”

The deal saw them become label mates with global superstars such as Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Taylor Swift to name a few.

The partnership seems to have as Kingdom expressed wanting more autonomy over her music

“I felt so out of place, things weren’t feeling right. I want to take some of my career and keep some of me for me.”

She acknowledged that it will be more challenging without a label effort behind her but remains up to the task in being her authentic self

“It’s going to be hectic because there’s no longer a machine behind me, but I always want to be me,” she added.

During her stint with the label she released-several tracks including- “Dickmatized,” “Fling It Back” and “Last Night,” all of which formed part of her “New Motion EP” in 2022.

Her summer viral hit ‘GPP’ was also released during her time with the label. Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor produced single has racked up over 8 million streams since its release.

The two have worked on her feature with John Legend titled Speaking in Tongues’ which formed part of his self-titled album.

It’s understood that there are a few new deals available however she is, for now focusing on being an independent artiste.

The departure however appears to have no impact on her musical acumen with Kingdom delivering arguably one of the songs of the year with ‘Turn Me on’ featuring young talent 9ine (formerly Nincea).

The Russian Produced track racked up over a million streams in its first four days and has so far garnered more than 4.2 million views.

Jada credits the likes of the ‘Worl Boss’ – Vybz Kartel and Spice among her inspirations- “My style and inspiration stem from people like Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, The Manhattans, The Temptations, Diana King. New age sounds, I love Spice and of course Vybz Kartel.”

She also noted the latter to have both consistently supported her journey in music.

When asked about her dream collaborations, she listed Rihanna, Tiwa Savage, and Nicki Minaj as well as Drake and Dexta Daps. She also revealed that four songs with Dexta Daps have already materialized.

She however remained tight-lipped about the details of the singles.

Her journey and growth she says will be reflected in her debut album- ‘Twinkle’ which references her nickname; “[It’s a] beautiful compilation of work. It’s very much me”.

According to the publication, Jada says the album’s name was “necessary,” a reflection of her ever-evolving humanness.
