Former Wolmerian and Man Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James has landed a series order from HBO and the UK’s Channel 4 for his crime drama Get Millie Black.

It will be a six-part series produced by HBO and the British public broadcaster and will be centered around an ex-Scotland Yard detective Mille-Jean Black, who is forced to return to Kingston amidst numerous missing person cases that threaten to expose more than what she had initially foreseen.

Marlon James’ Get Millie Black is a true original that explores the troubled history of racism, slavery, and sexuality in the post-colonial context of Jamaican society. The opportunity will allow James to bring to TV screens around the world a descriptive but authentic version of Jamaica never really explored before in modern television production.

James’ inspiration for the drama came from his mother, where he explained that she was one of the first policewomen in Jamaica to be promoted to detective.

“Storytelling has always struck me first and foremost as a mystery to be solved—which I’m sure I got from her,” he said.

“With Get Millie Black, Marlon James has achieved the extraordinary, invigorating noir storytelling by bringing it to his native Jamaica through a dazzling mosaic of shifting perspectives,” said Francesca Orsi, Senior Vice President of Drama Series at HBO Programming. “He is one of the most prolific and imaginative authors of our time and we’re honored that he has entrusted HBO with this thrilling and deeply personal story,“ she added.

Filming in both the UK and Jamaica have already been commissioned and production is expected to commence in early 2022. The Executive Producers of the series will be Simon Maxwell (Motive Pictures), Marlon James, and Leopoldo Gout.
