Jamaican sentenced to 11-year imprisonment after attempting to smuggle cocaine into Cayman

A 35-year-old Jamaican man who is said to be the mastermind behind a failed drug smuggling attempt in the Cayman Islands has been sentenced to 11 years.

The accused Andre Caine was arrested in April 2020 in George Town for attempting to import 22 ounces of cocaine in a can of cheese in the Cayman Islands.

Court documents also revealed that Customs and Border Patrol Officers discovered the can of cheese in a luggage belonging to Andre Caine who arrived at the Owen Roberts International Airport on a Cayman Airways flight from Kingston on April 20, 2020.

Following the discovery, the officers conducted a test to ascertain if the substance found in the tin was actually cocaine. The test later confirmed that the seized substance was indeed 22 ounces of cocaine.

Davis later informed officers that he was carrying the suitcase to Cayman as a request from a friend, identified as 27-year-old Jamaican; Caine however was later arrested after the investigations concluded.

The accused Andre Caine however denied having any involvement in the ordeal but was later convicted of two counts of importation of a controlled drug in January.

While Joseph and Caine who were also charged were acquitted by a jury.
