Soon a cashless fare collection system could be the only payment method for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) as they test the system for the next 6 months.

This according to the government owned company which states that this is a means to secure the day-to-day fares collected and to safeguard the cash of commuters.

Minister of Technology, Daryl Vaz

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz, made the announcement about the pilot project during the post-Cabinet press briefing on Wednesday at Jamaica House.

The Minister indicated that it will be a “big help in relation to the viability of the JUTC.”

He added that “it takes billions of dollars out of the budget every year for subsidy,” and his intention is to make sure it survives on its own.
