NBA superstar Lebron James will continue to wear the now retire number 6 on his jersey despite the League retiring the number in honor of the late Legendary former player Bill Russel who passed this passed this week.
James who switched from his original 23 in 2021 after dawning the iconic double digits in his first three seasons with Lakers, will be among several players who have been allowed to retain the jersey number during their career.
The league however will retire the jersey from each franchise after the players leave.
The decision to officially hang up the iconic six of the Celtics Legend, was unanimously decided by the league and respective franchises shortly after Russell’s passing.
Russell is an NBA hall of famer has won the NBA championships a record 11-times, the most by any other player active or retired with the great Michael Jordan holding six rings the late Kobe Bryant winning five and LeBron boasting four titles.
“The life and legacy of 11-time NBA champion and civil rights pioneer Bill Russell will be honored by retiring his uniform number, 6, throughout the league. The iconic Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer will be the first player to have his number retired across the NBA” the NBA revealed in a tweet on Thursday.
The NBA legend was said to have passed on July 31 2021.
