Reggae Boyz striker Leon Bailey silenced some of his critics with a spectacular performance in the 4-1 dismissal of Trinidad and Tobago to restore the Reggae Boyz Gold Cup campaign in City Park St. Louis on Wednesday.
Bailey came in for strong criticisms following Jamaica’s dramatic 1-1 draw against the US in which he missed a penalty as Jamaica relinquished a late goal where he was forced to shared a point.
The Aston Villa striker who assured fans of an improved performance by the team led by example with a two goal contribution against Trinidad.
Bailey set the tone early with an assist for the opening goal by Demarai Gray in the 13th minute.
Bailey turned from provider to finisher after netting a goal of his own four minutes later.
The winger timed his run to perfection to receive a long cross from Kemar Lambert as he showed technical composure to finish off the play following a one on one with the keeper.
His goal was confirmed following an offside review as the score remained 2-0 in favor Jamaica.
The national team extended their advantage in the 29th minute as Gray calmly dispatched a Michail Antonio pass across the six yard box to secure his brace as Jamaica took 3-0 lead at the half hour mark.
Despite Trinidad pulling a goal back in the 49th minute the Boyz would ultimately have final say as teen talent Dujuan Richards marked his Gold Cup debut with is maiden goal following a 92nd minute strike to put the cherry on top of a delightful performance .
Richards, who replaced Bailey as a late sub, launched a powerful shot which deflected into the T&T goal to make 4-1 and close out proceedings.
The win sees Jamaica consolidate second place with four points after two games with US moving into first following their 6-0 hiding of St. Kitts & Nevis.
The qualifiers from the group will be decided on Sunday when all teams play their final games respectively.
