After the reported theft of several windows from the Green Acres Police station in St. Catherine, the Minister of National Security, the Hon. Dr. Horace Chang is recommending limited occupancy.
The building which has been left unoccupied for months after construction since last year, was built at a cost of $73 million. Flooding on lands leading to the facility has been cited as the main cause for the lack of operation.
In that regard, the Security Minister said; “This is a finely constructed police station and we will be doing some necessary work to tidy it up for occupancy. When done we will see our finest police officers here to serve the people in the nearby communities. We have heard the cry of the residents who are demanding something be done to fix the problem and we are actively dealing with measures to ensure their request is dealt with.”
The Minister also said that preparation work ahead of the limited occupancy in the short term will include, minor electrical works, replacement of windows and other small improvements to allow for functionality. He further stated that some occupancy is crucial at this time for the police to serve and protect the residents of Green Acres and surrounding districts.
“It would be futile for such a finely constructed police station to remain unoccupied and left for vagrants to loot its fixtures, so we are going to do as much work to remedy the situation over the short to medium term,” the Minister stated.
Drainage work in the area will cost approximately $60 million.
