The Government is now moving to further postpone local elections which were slated to be held next month.

This news comes in light of Prime Minister Andrew Holness noting last November, that it was not in favour of calling a local government election as the government was still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, in November 2020, the House approved the amendments to temporarily modify the Representation of the People Act, to allow local government elections to be postponed up to February 27, 2022.

However, a Bill entitled The Representation of the People (Postponement of Elections to Municipal Corporations and City Municipalities) Act 2022, is slated to be tabled in the House of Representatives this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the last local government general election was held on November 28, 2016, which means the municipal bodies have already exceeded their normal three-year term of office by more than two years.
