Spain manager Luis Enrique has become the second coaching casualty following his team’s exit from the 2022 World Cup after parting ways with the national team.

News of his departure comes just days following Spain’s shock exit at the hands of surprise package Morocco via a penalty shoot in their round-of-16 game on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old took charge in 2018 and guided Spain to the Euro 2020 semi-finals, where they lost to Italy.

“We would like to thank Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff,” said the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Thursday as they confirmed his exit.

The federation also announced that Under-21s coach Luis de la Fuente is set to be his successor in the role.

Spain had generated interest as a possible challenger for the title after opening with a 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica in the opening group match in Qatar.

However, those expectations and momentum gradually faded following a 1-1 draw with Germany which was proceeded by their 2-1 loss to Japan in their final group game.

They were then knocked out of the tournament on penalties by Morocco, after a goalless 120 minutes.

Enrique’s exit followed Belgium’s manager Roberto Martinez resignation following their shock first round.
