France football star Kylian Mbappe was officially confirmed as the new captain of the National team ahead of their European Championship qualifiers later this month.

Mbappe’s appointment to the captaincy was announced via the French team’s official social media account on Tuesday.

The news officially brings an end to days of speculation as to Manager Didier Deschamps’s choice to wear the armband going forward.

The 24-year-old, who was also elevated to the captain of Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germaine (PSG), succeeds former captain Hugo Lloris following his retirement from international football following the World Cup.

Mbappe also joins Lloris as one of the youngest France captains ever.

The Tottenham Hotspurs keeper, who wore the armband for 14 years (2008-2022) was also 24 on his appointment.

Atletico Madrid striker Antione Griezmann was also named Vice Captain of the two-time World Cup winners.

France is set to kick off their Euro qualifiers on March 24 when they face the Netherlands in Group A action at Stade de France.
