Former Germany International football player, Mesut Ozil has officially called time on his playing career. He made the announcement of his retirement on Wednesday.

Ozil,34, took to social media to share the news with fans.

Ozil said; “It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions. I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity. But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it’s become more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football.”

Ozil rose to prominence following his move to Real Madrid in 2010, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.

He also became one of Arsenal’s brightest stars, signing in 2018 where he spent three and half years, winning four FA Cup titles before his acrimonious departure in 2021.

He also had joined Fenerbahçe SK on a free transfer before going to İstanbul Başakşehir F.K. in 2022, however, injuries limited him to just eight appearances.

His most significant achievement would be with Germany as part of their World Cup-winning team which lifted the country’s fourth title in 2014.
