The Mexican police have seized a whopping total of 660 pounds of fentanyl pills which were packaged in coconuts at the Northern border state of Sonora on Thursday.
Official reports indicate that the bust was made after detectives discovered a truck with two passengers aboard which was travelling along a highway that runs along the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez.
The driver of the truck was signalled to stop to which he complied. Shortly after, detectives commenced a search of the vehicle which yielded the illegal opioid.
According to detectives, thousands of blue pills were found in plastic bags neatly tucked inside the coconuts, which had been split apart and then glued back together with the drugs inside.
Subsequently, both suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of attempting to transport illegal substances, their identities however are being withheld pending further investigations.
Research has so far indicated that there has been a significant increase in fentanyl overdoses in the United States each year.
Data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also revealed that drug overdose deaths rose from 2019 to 2020 with 91,799 drug overdose deaths reported in 2020.
In addition, deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone primarily fentanyl continued to rise with 56,516 overdose deaths reported in 2020.
