Saturday night in El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador, was the most beautiful day in the universe ending with several firsts as Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua took home the Miss Universe title for the first time.
At the culmination of the annual beauty pageant, which started two weeks ago, Nicaragua was a standout, from her walk to her poses and even the way she spoke.
When the top 20 semi-finalists were announced at the beginning of the night’s proceedings it was of no surprise that she would have been named.
Jamaica’s very own Dr. Jordanne Lauren Levy was also a part of the top 20 but following the swimsuit round, the field was narrowed to 10 and Levy was knocked out of the running.
In the meantime, Miss Universe saw a few firsts; Miss Nepal a plus-size model placed in the top 20, and Miss Columbia, placed in the top five as a mother and wife.
The competition also saw transgender representation by the Netherlands and Spain.
Nonetheless, the top 10 was announced and the evening gown round was then used by the judges to cut to the top 5 contestants and then it was down to the top 3.
Miss Nicaragua, Sheynnis Palacios – Miss Thailand, Anntonia Porsild and Miss Australia, Moraya Wilson.
Ultimately, Palacios became the first-ever Nicaraguan to win the title – marking the country’s fifth time placing in the semifinals. Miss Thailand Anntonia Porsild placed as first runner-up (second) with Miss Australia Moraya Wilson taking the second runner-up (third).
