The athletics world was again left to marvel at the future of Jamaica’s sprinting pedigree after juniors, Bouwahjgie Nkrumie and Alana Reid logged world-leading times for both male and female on a record-breaking night on day three of the ISSA Boys and Girls Championships.

On a night which saw anticipation begin to bubble with the class 1 100 meters among the set of first finals of the championships, fans were given a treat in the blue ribboned event as Hydel’s Alana Reid and Kingston College’s Nkrumie

One of the championships’ pre-race favorites Reid, who was ticked to take gold in the absence of rival Serena Cole of Edwin Allen, produced a lifetime best of 10.92 seconds to demolish the previous record (11.13s) held by the iconic Veronica Campbell Brown.

Not only did Reid’s time shatter a 22-year-old record, but was also the fastest time by any female this year.

The time by the Hydel teen, who was also a part of Jamaica’s U-20 world record breaking quartet, also makes her the seventh fastest female in Jamaica’s history.

Historic would be the defining theme of the night in the male section as Nkrumie etched his name into the record books by becoming the first-ever school boy to run sub-10 at Champs following his 9.99 seconds in his finals.

The time by the World Under-20 championship silver medalist, was a World Lead, as he dismantled his own champs record of 10.08 seconds set in the semi-final 45 minutes earlier.

However, South Africa’s Akani Simbine later lowered that mark at 9.98s at the South African Championships on Thursday morning.

Nkrumie’s performance however marks the latest in a revival of Jamaica’s male sprinting prowess.
