Shadow Minister of Education and Training, Dr Angela Brown-Burke, is now issuing a plea to the Ministry of Education to allow grade six students to sit their PEP exams in March instead of the proposed February 2022 date.

This plea comes in light of concerns that were relayed by both parents and teachers, who are worried about the students’ state of readiness following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As such, Brown-Burke is appealing for reasonableness, insisting that to do otherwise would ignore the impact of the disruptions in the teaching and learning process over the last two years.

“Many of our students are only beginning to settle back into the routine or face-to-face schooling,” Brown-Burke noted.

“It is incumbent upon the government to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for them,” Brown-Burke added.

Burke also noted that since the assessments for both grades four and five were cancelled for this same point, the cohort of grade six students is in need of this consideration in order to exude their best.

Brown-Burke further noted that students should be given this extension to March 2022 when they can sit the ability assessment instead of the performance task.

This, she noted, will provide an extra month of learning and preparation.
