More than 50 persons on board a passenger plane are feared dead after the plane disappeared shortly after take-off. The plane the Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737, went missing shortly after take-off from the Indonesian capital Jakarta. Reports are that the aircraft lost more than 3,000m (10,000ft) in altitude in less than a minute.

The BBC has reported that residents near the area where the plane went missing say that they have found objects they think are from the aircraft. Meanwhile, there have been images of what seem to be aircraft debris posted on tv and social media.

The plane is a 27-year-old Boeing 737-500. In recent years Boeing has been under scrutiny after the 737 Max model was involved in two major crashes which left over 300 persons dead.

The Indonesian Transport Ministry says search and rescue operations are underway.
